The Department of Chemistry was one of the earliest
Centers of Post-graduate teaching and research under
the Bombay University. Later, the newly formed
Karnatak University has trodden the path of five
decades beginning with Late Prof. K.S. Nargund, as
founder Chairman of the Chemistry Department in
1953. Taking the reigns of this Department in early
1960's, Prof. S. Siddappa provided a new fillip to
this department creating new infrastructure, setting
up facilities for research and grooming Organic,
Inorganic, Physical and Biochemistry branches. Now,
the Department is progressing under the leadership
of Prof. S. T. Nandebewoor.
The Department provides an outstanding environment for research and
study. The Department has a long history of research
achievement stretching back to 1950s. In recent
years the research activity of the Department has
grown stronger than ever. During these years, the
Department and several teachers have received funds
from various agencies like DST, UGC, UGC-SAP, AICTE,
DST-FIST, and private Industries, and procured
instruments like 300 MHz spectrometer, FTIR,
Spectrophotometer, Potentiostat, TG Analyzer, CHN
Analyzer, Gouy and Faraday Balances, GLC, Rapid
Kinetic Accessory etc. Some of the faculty members
have got prestigious Fellowships to take up
postdoctoral studies in USA, UK, Germany, Greece,
South Korea, Taiwan and so on. Department is proud
of several Ph.D. graduates who are pursuing
Postdoctoral Studies in Canada, USA, UK, Belgium,
France, Taiwan, South Korea, Spain etc. Currently
the Department has 12 members of academic staff,
over 140 Master students, 2 M.Phil students and over
60 Ph.D students. The Department has spacious
laboratories and equipped above mentioned
instruments. Many staff members of the department
have collaboration with various Universities,
Research Institutes and Industries in India and
abroad.
The research areas of interests of the present staff include
Coordination Chemistry, Ion-exchange chromatography,
Chemical Biology, Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic
Polymers, Kinetic, Mechanistic and catalysis studies
of bioactive compounds, Development of ion-exchange
membranes for electro-dialysis and fuel cell
applications, Development of hybrid, homogeneous and
composite membranes for pervaporation applications,
polymers and liquid mixture studies, chemistry of
oils and fats, Heterocyclic Chemistry. Over 300
students have been awarded Ph.D degree, and more
than 2500 students have got Master degrees, since
the inception of the Department. The total number of
research publications of the department exceeds
2000. The department is proud of its alumni as
several of them have been serving in various
capacities in different fields of Science and
Technology, Industries, Universities, Research
Organizations in India and abroad.
